How to Send Calls Directly to Voicemail on iPhone, Android and Business Lines
There are four ways to do it, and they behave very differently. Here’s how to send calls directly to voicemail one call at a time, for one specific number, for every caller you don’t know, or for everyone during set hours.
The first three take seconds. The fourth is where business owners get hurt, because a rule that quietly sends unknown numbers to voicemail also sends every new customer there.
Below are the steps for iPhone and Android, checked against Apple and Google’s own support pages, followed by the setups for business lines and a short test for whether a given rule is safe on a number customers call.
How to send calls directly to voicemail on iPhone
Send one incoming call to voicemail
Apple’s guide to answering or declining calls on iPhone lists three ways to decline a ringing call:
- Press the side button twice quickly.
- Tap the Decline Call button.
- Swipe up on the call banner.
You can also tap the call banner and choose Voicemail. A declined call goes to voicemail, though Apple notes that in some countries or regions declined calls are disconnected instead.
Pressing the side button or a volume button once only silences the ring. The call keeps going until it rolls to voicemail on its own, and you can still answer it until then.
Send one person’s calls to voicemail every time
Block them. Open the Phone app, tap Contacts, tap the contact, then tap Block Contact. The same Apple page on screening and blocking calls on iPhone covers the steps. Their calls stop ringing your phone; check your carrier’s voicemail settings if you also don’t want messages from them.
Send unknown or spam callers to voicemail
Go to Settings, tap Apps, then Phone, and find the unknown-callers setting. Apple’s screen and block calls guide describes three choices:
- Never: your iPhone rings for unsaved numbers.
- Ask Reason for Calling: unknown callers are asked for more information before the phone rings.
- Silence: calls from unsaved numbers are silenced, sent to voicemail, and appear in Recents.
There’s a separate spam setting. Calls your carrier flags as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to a Spam list.
Send everyone to voicemail for a while
Turn on a Focus, such as Do Not Disturb or Sleep, from Control Center. Calls from people you haven’t allowed won’t ring. Set a schedule if you want it to happen every night, and add the people who should always get through.
Sending calls to voicemail on Android
Android phones vary by maker. The steps below follow Google’s Phone app, which ships on Pixel and many other phones. Samsung and others use their own dialer with similar menus under different names.
Decline a single call
Tap Decline on the incoming-call screen. On most carrier plans that routes the caller to your voicemail box. Some newer Pixel phones can also offer an automated “take a message” feature for missed and declined calls, per Google’s Phone app help on Take a Message. Availability depends on your phone and region.
Block one number
Google’s Phone app guide to blocking a number gives these steps:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More, then Call history.
- Tap a call from the number you want to block.
- Tap Block / report spam.
One detail matters here. Google says the phone declines blocked calls automatically, and if visual voicemail is on, blocked callers can’t leave a voicemail. So on Android, blocking may not send the call to voicemail at all.
Block unknown or private numbers
In the Phone app, tap More, then Settings, then Blocked numbers, and turn on Unknown. Per the same Google Phone app help page, this blocks private or unidentified numbers. It doesn’t block numbers that simply aren’t in your contacts. That’s a narrower rule than the iPhone’s Silence option.
Send everyone to voicemail on a schedule
Use Do Not Disturb or another Mode. Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb on Android explains how to choose which people can interrupt you. Turn on Allow repeat callers and anyone who calls twice within 15 minutes will ring through. For a trade where a real emergency usually calls back right away, that setting is worth having.
Business lines: VoIP, desk phones and forwarding
A business line doesn’t live on one handset, so the controls sit in a different place.
- VoIP and hosted phone systems usually have a Do Not Disturb toggle per user and business-hours rules in the admin portal. An after-hours rule that points to voicemail is the business equivalent of a nightly Focus. Check your provider’s documentation for the exact menu.
- Desk phones often have a DND button. It’s easy to press during a meeting and forget, which leaves the line silent for the rest of the day.
- Carrier call forwarding can send all calls, or only unanswered ones, to another number. Our guide to call forwarding to an answering service explains the difference between forwarding every call and forwarding only the ones you miss.
If calls are already reaching voicemail and you didn’t set any of this up, start with our troubleshooting list on why calls go straight to voicemail.
When it’s safe to send business calls to voicemail
Here’s my test. Sending a call to voicemail is fine when you know who’s calling and they’ll call back. It’s a problem when the caller is a stranger with a job to give away.
Usually safe:
- Declining a known vendor or a sales rep while you’re on a job.
- Blocking a spam number that’s called three times this week.
- A personal phone you never give to customers.
Usually a mistake on a customer-facing number:
- Silence Unknown Callers. Every first-time customer is an unknown caller.
- Blocking unknown numbers broadly on Android, since some legitimate callers show up as private.
- An after-hours rule that sends every call to voicemail with no emergency path. A burst pipe at 11 PM doesn’t wait for your morning.
- Leaving a phone on DND after a meeting.
Many callers who hit voicemail hang up and dial the next listing. We run the numbers on that in our post on the cost of missed business calls, and you can plug in your own call volume with the missed call calculator.
If you do route calls to voicemail, two things soften the damage. A greeting that tells callers when they’ll hear back, from our after-hours voicemail greeting scripts. And a missed call text back, so the caller gets a reply even if they never leave a message.
FAQ
How do I send a call straight to voicemail without the caller knowing? On iPhone, press the side button twice or tap Decline. On Android, tap Decline. The caller hears your voicemail greeting either way. A single press of the iPhone’s side button silences the ring, and the call goes to voicemail after it rings out.
Does blocking a number send it to voicemail? It depends on the phone and carrier. On iPhone, a blocked contact’s calls stop ringing you. Google’s Phone app help says blocked calls are declined automatically and, with visual voicemail on, blocked callers can’t leave a voicemail.
How do I send all unknown callers to voicemail? On iPhone, set the unknown-callers option under Settings, Apps, Phone to Silence. On Android with Google’s Phone app, the Unknown toggle under Blocked numbers only covers private or unidentified numbers. Think twice before using either on a line customers call.
Can I send calls to voicemail only after business hours? Yes. Use a scheduled Focus on iPhone, a scheduled Mode on Android, or business-hours rules in your VoIP portal. Give urgent callers a path through, such as repeat callers or an on-call number.
Is it rude to send a customer’s call to voicemail? Not if they hear back quickly. The real risk is that a new customer won’t leave a message and will call a competitor instead.
